Quick answer

The demo is free on Steam (app 3618740) and the Microsoft Store, covers roughly an hour with no timer, and ends when you walk into the prison. It saves now — since the June 2026 update — and that save will not carry into the full game.

What you get

About an hour of content, no time limit, and the same opening the full game uses: the campfire, the first door that wants a full stomach, the sewers and the route toward the prison. Players commonly report one to two hours depending on how much they explore.

It is a separate application with its own store page and its own system requirements, and it has no achievements of its own. Online co-op is in the store categories, so you can bring friends; there is no split screen.

The save question, which the store gets wrong

The Steam demo page still says: "There's no Save and Load of games, everytime you start, it's a new save game from scratch." That sentence was written in February 2026, and it has been false since 15 June 2026.

The v1013 update added saves, load, controller support, food spoilage, food baskets, burning food on the rotisserie and session rejoin. The developer's 12 June announcement says it plainly: start a game, stop anytime, save, and load it back.

What remains true is the second half of that announcement: "the save file in the demo doesn't carry through to the full game." So you can save your progress within the demo, and you cannot bring it with you when you buy.

What the demo deliberately leaves out

The official line at launch was that two things stay in the full game: bosses and the big puzzles. In practice that removes more than it sounds like.

  • No bosses, including the Giant Spider that holds a gem in the release build.
  • No large puzzles, which is why the Jaguar Door never opens here. A March 2026 update removed what was behind it.
  • No clay, no pickaxe, no axe, no explosives. The developer confirmed clay and the pickaxe were added for the full release.
  • No statue puzzle and no sanctuary door, since those belong to the crypt and temple regions.

That list matters because it explains the most common demo complaint. Goo piles you cannot break are not a bug; the pickaxe does not exist in this build, and neither does the material it drops.

Where it ends

Walking into the prison triggers the end. The screen reads "END OF DEMO" with a thank-you and a wishlist prompt, which is a clean stopping point rather than a wall — you have seen the camp, the first door, the sewers and the approach to the prison.

For the full game, that is roughly the first hour of a fifteen-hour playthrough. The developer described the release as about fifteen times the size of the demo, with different progression and items even where the level design rhymes.

What to test in the hour

An hour is enough to answer the questions that decide a purchase, if you spend it deliberately rather than running the route.

Try the inventory squeeze: fill your six slots and notice whether the walk back reads as tension or as chores. Cook one meal, since the food system is the mechanic critics divide on hardest. And walk through the first door, which is the clearest statement of how this game teaches anything.

Co-op is worth testing too, because the demo supports online sessions and the game reviews very differently in company. Two players and one shared dungeon is the version most positive write-ups describe.

What you cannot test is puzzle design. The statue pedestals, the golden door and the sanctuary door all sit past the demo's ending.

Version history, briefly

Five builds tell the story better than a changelog summary.

Demo saves and the full game are separate worlds

If you are deciding whether to buy, treat the demo as a trial of the systems rather than an early start. Nothing transfers: not inventory, not recipes, not the world seed. Plan to replay the opening hour.

Is the demo representative?

Partly. The crafting, cooking, inventory squeeze and combat all carry over, and the first door teaches the same lesson it teaches in the release build. What you cannot judge is the puzzle design, the bosses, or how the food system scales once recipes unlock — which is most of what reviewers actually argue about.

The other honest caveat: every guide written against the demo describes a game that no longer exists. Clay, the pickaxe, the axe and the statue puzzle were all added for release, so a 2026-02 walkthrough is a historical document.

Where to play it

Steam is the path most people use, and the Microsoft Store carries a Windows version. There is no demo on Xbox consoles — the console build has no trial at all.

Both versions support macOS as of 8 October 2026, and the demo's Mac requirements are the more reliable ones in the store data: macOS 11 Big Sur with an Apple M1 or M3.

Quick answers

Is there a free demo?

Yes. It is free on Steam (app 3618740) and the Microsoft Store, about an hour long, with no time limit.

Can I save in the demo?

Yes, since the 15 June 2026 update. The store page still claims you cannot, because that text dates from February.

Does demo progress carry over?

No. The developer confirmed the demo save does not transfer to the full game.

Is there a demo on Xbox?

No. There is a Windows version through the Microsoft Store, but no console demo.

Confidence note

Length, content limits and the save behaviour come from the developer's June 2026 announcement, the Steam demo page fields and two community guides, checked on 2026-10-27. The version table is reconstructed from those sources; no patch notes exist for the 8 October build.
