Deep Dish Dungeon Guide: Walkthrough, Tools and Progress
No map, no compass, no quest marker. Progress in this dungeon is a tool you have not found yet, or a door whose condition you have not met.

Official mediaQuick answer
Fill all three food slots to open the first door, then follow the tool chain: hammer in the sewers, pickaxe near the prison, axe for the roots, explosives for the rock piles. The dungeon gates on equipment, not on persistence — if a wall refuses every tool you own, you are missing one, not damage.
Start at the campfire, not in the corridor
You wake beside a campfire with a sleeping bag, a chest and a letter. Before walking into the dark, pick up the torch, light the fire with sticks ("Bring Wood to light"), and eat something. Then drink from the spring next to the first door, because clean water counts toward your stomach like food does.
The camp is not decoration either. Three cheap crafts change how the first two hours feel, and all three cost materials you can gather within sight of the fire.
| Camp item | Cost | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Small Chest | 2 Wood Plank + 3 Scrap Metal | Moves your stockpile out of your pockets |
| Food Basket | 3 Vines | Food spoils about three times slower inside it |
| Rope | 2 Vines + 1 Stick | Makes the first nail drop survivable |
The first door only wants a full stomach
The door's own text is blunt: "Door blocked. You need a full stomach to proceed." Your stomach holds three slots, and a drink occupies one of them, so the usual answer is a bottle of water plus two cooked dishes. Players worked this out by trial, because the game never explains it.
If the door still will not open, you are not bugged and you are not short on damage. You are one dish short. Cook something, eat it, and try the handle again.
Inventory is the real difficulty setting
You start with six slots and can craft an early upgrade to nine. That number decides whether a trip ends with a useful toolkit or with a pile of ore you had to leave on the floor, so pack the tool you came for rather than the tool you might need.
Since patch 1.0.50.0 your carried inventory no longer drops when you die, which changes how expensive a failed run actually is. Every launch-week walkthrough still describes the old penalty, including the ones still ranking well.
Do not grind the first wall
A passage that refuses every tool you own is a tool gate, not a damage check. Bank what you are carrying, go back for the next upgrade, and return. The dungeon is hand-built and fixed, so nothing you leave behind is lost.
The five blockers, and the tool each one wants
Almost every early dead end is one of these five. Knowing which tool clears which is faster than brute force, and two of them are commonly confused with each other.
| Blocker | Tool that works | Where it shows up first |
|---|---|---|
| Roots | Axe or Great Axe | Overgrown passages past the sewers |
| Rusty bars | Hammer | Prison-adjacent walls |
| Yellow slime | Pickaxe | Ore veins and blocked corridors |
| Rock piles | Explosives | Debris hiding side rooms |
| Cobwebs | Lit torch, held in the right hand | Doorways and ceiling clusters |
One trap worth naming: the War Hammer counts as a sword, not a hammer, so it does not open rusty bars. The tool has to match the obstacle, and the game will not tell you when it does not.
One recorded route, not the only route
Every published walkthrough is a single player's path, and the dungeon is explicitly non-linear. The route most of them describe runs in this order, with the timestamps one recorded run took:
- Hammer in the sewers — turn the handwheel, crawl the ceiling pipes (00:08:59).
- Silver Dagger behind the Jaguar Door (00:29:57).
- Pickaxe near the prison (00:59:24).
- Giant Spider, which drops the Tomato Gem (01:22:52).
- Axe for roots, explosives for rock piles (02:38:17 and 02:46:39).
- Giant Moray Eel, which drops the Guarana Gem (03:31:30).
- Golden door with three dishes, which yields the Queen Crown (03:43:53).
- Place the four gems and win the final fight for the Seed (04:15:53).
Treat that as a checklist of milestones rather than a script. If your save took a different turn, you have not broken anything.
Two numbers that get mixed up constantly
The developer described Deep Dish Dungeon as "a 15-20 hours game, at least" on Discord in September 2026, and that is the honest estimate for a first, blind playthrough. A recorded run that collected all 22 treasures finished in about four hours and twenty minutes of footage.
Those two figures measure different things: first-time exploration versus a player who already knows the map. Neither is a promise for your save, and quoting the second as "the length of the game" is how a fifteen-hour dungeon gets reviewed as a four-hour one.
When you are actually stuck
Death returns you to whichever sleeping bag you set as your respawn point, not to the campfire, and the game autosaves on its own. If you are wedged in geometry or sealed into a room, the pause menu has Starve to Death, which sends you back to your last save rather than forcing a new character.
Patches 1.0.50.0 and 1.0.51.0 cleaned up most of the ways players got trapped: duplicated lobbies, loading in with zero HP and no inventory, and being thrown into the void near the Temple statue. Running anything older than 1.0.51.0 means debugging bugs the developer already fixed.
No map, no compass — what to use instead
Navigation runs on landmarks and on the Catalogue, which opens with T and lists the treasures you have found against the ones still missing. It is the closest thing to a progress tracker the game offers, and it is the fastest way to work out whether a region is finished.
The four landmarks worth memorising are the campfire, the spring beside the first door, the prison gate and the stairs down to the crypt. Nearly every route description you will read uses one of them as its anchor.
The ending, in one paragraph
The true ending wants 21 of the 22 treasures returned: eleven go back where they belong, six gold pieces go into the golden chest in the Inner Castle, and four gems go onto the sanctuary door in the Temple. After the Giant Moray Eel's room empties, a hidden control room appears; press the button to the left of the terminal and type shutdown. The Seed is the twenty-second treasure and the one you keep.
Quick answers
What should I do first in Deep Dish Dungeon?
Light the campfire, eat and drink until all three food slots are full, and open the first door. Everything else follows the same rhythm: go down light, come back with materials, spend them at camp.
How long does a first playthrough take?
The developer's own estimate is 15 to 20 hours minimum, and community reports run longer for players who explore thoroughly. A recorded all-treasure run took about 4 hours 20 minutes, but that player already knew the route.
Is there a map?
No. There is no map, no compass and no quest marker by design, and no community-made full map has been published yet. Use landmarks and the Catalogue to track progress.
Do I lose my items when I die?
Not since patch 1.0.50.0. Your backpack stays with you and the game keeps a backup of your last good save; see the patch notes for what changed and when.
Confidence note
Opening steps, camp costs, the three-slot stomach, the six-to-nine inventory upgrade and the five blockers are cross-checked against published walkthroughs and the official Steam patch notes on 2026-10-27. The route order and its timestamps come from one recorded run — the dungeon is non-linear and the developer has never published an official route.
